Friday trifles

There's lots of things I think "I should blog that" but it doesn't warrant a full blog posts...so here are just some little trifles and tidbits of our goings ons

Check out this attractive photo:
Yes, you can call me Grandma Laura. I'm wearing knee high panty hose (actually folded down because I'm so short knee high goes past my knee. Uncomfortable!) So why you ask am I spending money on knee high panty hose? It's the dress code!! I thought that when it said "panty hose required" they meant when you wear a skirt or dress. They mean all the time, as in when you wear heels with your pants. Ugh! I guess you can actually get in trouble for not wearing them. Does this seem really old-fashioned? I gotta say I'm no fashionista, but I really don't like the look of open toed shoes with panty hose and that's all I've been seeing the past couple of weeks. I feel bad for my pregnant coworker. I told her "oh, you'll love being pregnant in the summer. Dresses are great and the bands on skirts are so much better...oh wait, you have to wear panty hose?!" Do they even make pregnancy panty hose?! But my job is really really great so if my worse complaint is this I think I'm doing pretty well. (On another note I do applaud Mark Zuckerberg for wearing his hoodie to wall street. Why should those bankers who had to be bailed out grumble and demand respect? Plus, I think MZ would look odd in a suit. hmmm... Of course, I'm not a billionaire so I'll stick to the dress code)

Next photo represents my evenings from 8-10:00:

So tough to decide between knitting or reading, especially when I've got a good book. I'm loving this scarf, but it's going to take forever to make because the yarn is about the thickness of floss. I pretty much want to make every pattern Jane Richmond makes. Check them out here: http://janerichmond.blogspot.com/p/patterns.html I've already made 3 different patterns from her.  The scarf above is the Motley pattern. I love her photography. It helps that she's absolutely gorgeous and models her designs perfectly.

On the reading side, can I just say I wish the library hold book list worked like netflix? I don't know how it is statistically possible that all my wait list books come at the same time. Some I request 6 months ago and I'm 128 in line and some I request 2 weeks ago and I'm 10 in line...and yet invariably they all come at the same time usually when I'm in the middle of some 1200 page book. I can't tell you how many times I haven't read a book I've been waiting for because I get 3 at once. I've been reading Daniel Deronda by George Elliot. I have about 800 pages to go so I put that down since I own the book. From the library I have The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides, author of Middlesex and The Virgin Suicides. LOVE IT! All my friends who were english majors go get a copy. One critic said No one can write teenage/college girl angst like Jeffrey Eugenides. So the truth! Then I've also got The Paris Wife from the library. That's on my kindle. I then got a notification for another e-book: Knitting 2 Socks at a Time. Like I have time to knit socks with all these books to read!

Reward chart--Total disaster yesterday. Penelope was a nightmare at daycare. Jumping on her cot at naptime, hitting, screaming, evil laugh, the whole 9 yards. You know what she said last night? "If I was at my old school I wouldn't cry or hit because teacher Telma and Maya would be there" Ugh! I cried...A lot. But today it was much much better. She got to put her star on the chart and watch a half hour of Arthur.

Speaking of Arthur, did you know D.W. stands for Dora Winifred? Me either! Now if you ever have to say "Alex, Children's Literature for $1000" you may know the answer! I learned that in the "D.W. Go to your room" book when the mom says "Dora Winifred go to your room!". The D.W. Goes to Preschool book is also good. I loaded up on manners and preschool books at the library yesterday. We've read both D.W. books 3 times already. Penny likes when I do the whiny crying parts. I think it's funny we've traded one Dora for another Dora.

See, kind of odd thoughts not really blog worthy, but I thought I'd share anyways...

Panty hose? ALL THE TIME? Only in Minnesota. I think it would be a crime in Arizona only because it's so hot. Women in corporate offices would have a panty hose burning bon fire in retaliation like they did with bras back in the 60s or 70s or whenever that was. You're a good sport though - I like your positive attitude! :)

I am SO WITH YOU on the book reserve list at the library! That happens to me too! And then I get anxiety. So now I'm back down to just reserving one book at a time. Although I have two library books at the house right now and it's making me a little nervous.

That little Penny. What a stinker. I'm sorry and hope she gets consistently better. I know what it's like to cry out of frustration because your kids won't listen. One day they will. ha I'm not sure when and I don't know how long it will last, but one day!

Our company dress code says panty hose also, but pretty much everyone under age 40 ignores it. I make sure I dress appropriately if I'm going to be in the hospital or giving a tour, though. I assume you also have the no open-toed shoes policy?

And thanks for the recommended reading. :-)

Lastly, I'm sorry it's been such a tough transition for Penny. You may want to consider checking out a different place to test out, even if for a day or so. We learned through our experience w/Marissa in Fours Explores that it wasn't her, it was the environment. We worked with her for so long and her behavior got worse and worse until we finally did a trial run elsewhere. Once we changed the environment she went back to being her old sweet self. I can give you more info on our experience next time we chat!

What a crack up that you modelled your knee high hose on your blog, Laura! So does that mean with pants, you can't just wear matching colored socks?! That seems a bit overboard...but like you said, if that's all that you can find to complain about your job, then things are looking pretty good on that note. As for Penny, I have also been wondering what it is about the environment that's triggered all of these behaviors...maybe too regimented? Teacher's attitude and manner? Something...

Ugh, so you do have to wear panty hose with pants. That stinks.
And, I totally agree with the book hold list at the library. That always happens to me!
