Penny and books

I love kids books. When you find a good one, it can put such a smile on your face. I love finding one I had never heard of that is a gem. Even before we had Penelope I had about a dozen of my favorite kids books. Once I was pregnant we got tons. My mom sent my favorites that she had saved for me. Chris’s aunt is a children’s librarian, Chris’s grandma taught kindergarten for years, and my aunt read stories to elementary school kids for years as a volunteer. You bet we got the best of the best in children's literature.

Unfortunately as I’ve said on the blog before we don’t get to read many of them. Every night Penelope picks out the same books...Dr. Seuss books, Dora books, Maisy books, Curious George and a book called Tina Cocolina. That’s about it. She had more favorites at age 2! Even when we go to the library she limits herself to Dora and Maisy books. I’ll check out something else, but most times she whines and complains if I try to  read it. The last thing I want to fight over is reading! I know kids like reading the same books over and over again, but I’m kind of sick of memorizing books from reading them 60 times.

A few weeks ago I said “Mommy gets to pick 1 book and Penny gets to pick 1 book.” For the first few nights she pretty much ignored me while I read my book out loud. But then I picked Knuffle Bunny. I’ve tried to read this darling book to her before with no luck in capturing her attention. It is simple and pretty quick, but the cutest story about this baby and her stuffed animal, Knuffle Bunny. The fact that the photos are in Brooklyn adds to its charm for me. It’s by Mo Willems, the author of the pigeon books. Penny now LOVES Knuffle Bunny.

For whatever reason she decided if Mommy could pick a good story like Knuffle Bunny, then maybe, just maybe, Mommy could read other good stories. Every night she says “Mommy, you pick a story and I pick a story” If I pick one she has already read she tells me “noooo! We read that one” Of course, most times she selects the old favorites for her pick, but she also often picks out the one I read the night before. We get a little bit of new and a little bit of repetition. I’m excited to finally read all of these great books that are overflowing from her bookcase! Send me suggestions of your favorites!

You have to start with the Fountainhead or Atlas Shrugged. I'm sure she'll like them.

Ha ha your dad cracks me up.

Collin LOVES Maisy too. I've gotten him to like some of my favorite classics like The Very Hungry Caterpillar but others he still doesn't get into yet like Herold and the Purple Crayon and Courderoy. One I found for him at Christmas was "Night's Nice"....I can't remember who wrote it off the top of my head but the illustrations are fantastic and he really likes that book. His favorite right now is "Go Dog, Go!" although I realize Penny is probably at a higher level than he's at.

P.S. not a single article of clothing you sent me had any baby animals on them, I promise. In fact I kept every single thing you sent me. :) And I'm still wearing all the maternity clothes you sent me too.

P.P.S. I had commented on your last post but was on my phone and it went wacko so my comment never posted. But I'm glad that Penny is doing better at her school and glad that you don't have to worry about that as much. Adjusting is always hard, but I knew (and I know you did too) that it wouldn't last forever.

it always shocks me when Dylan allows me to read a new book! I just got him to put away "dinosaurs night before christmas."

The Walter the Farting Dog series of books are really cute. We even have the stuffed animal walter that makes farting noises. I'm sure Chris will enjoy these books too.

We really like Eileen Spinelli. Silly Tilly is a favorite right now.

Terrific for Penny, and especially for mommy that story time includes new story book selections...my favorite that I always remember my mom reading to my brother, Michael at bedtime is the Little Red Engine that Could...and then after that is Little Red Riding Hood...must be something with the color red, my favorite color when I was a kid. Of course, Penny's probably read these many times already!
